Tevye the Milkman

The collection of stories tells the funny and at the same time tragic story of Tevye, a milkman who lives in a shtetl, a town with a predominantly Jewish population. He is a small merchant, a violinist, a zealous Jew and the father of seven daughters. Tevye has a small fortune, so he strives to find wealthy brides for his daughters. However, this turns out to be not so easy. Zeitl, the eldest daughter, loves a poor tailor, so the prospect of marrying a rich butcher does not appeal to her at all. Godl, the second child, has feelings for a student revolutionary who may be sent into exile for his activities. Another daughter, Hava, fell in love with an Orthodox Christian. The fourth and fifth daughters, Sprinze and Beilke, at first please their father with their choice of wealthy brides, but everything, as always, goes awry.
