The Barnes family is in trouble. Dickie's car business is in decline, but instead of doing anything, he sits in the woods and prepares for the real end of the world. Meanwhile, his wife Imelda sells off her jewelry on eBay and diligently avoids the attention of the talkative local villain Big Mike. Their teenage daughter, Cas, usually the best in her class, seems intent on getting drunk to hell. And twelve-year-old P.J. is spending more and more time on video game forums, where he meets a friendly boy named Ethan, who never turns on his camera and wants P.J. to run away from home.

Digging through the layers of family history, the roots of this crisis reach deep into the past.
