Description

The collection of essays presents each of the 17 authors of the women's almanac "The First Wreath", which in 1887 initiated the tradition of women's writing in Ukraine. The publication will present interesting behind-the-scenes, moods, and circumstances of the publishing history of the almanac, which, in the conditions of stateless Ukraine and severe linguocide, managed to unite women writers from Galicia and the Dnieper region under one cover. "The First Wreath" has forever become a valuable document from the life of a Ukrainian woman.

The collection "Those Who Created "The First Wreath"" in the original version by scholars and researchers of women's history presents a holistic life-creating image of each of the authors of "The First Wreath" (Nataliya Kobrynska, Lesya Ukrainka, Olena Pchilka, Ulyana Kravchenko, Lyudmila Starytska, Olga Franko, Dniprova Chaika, Hanna Barvinok, Sofia Okunevska, Klymentyna Popovych, Olga Levytska, Kateryna Dovbenchuk, Anna Pavlyk, Sydora Navrotska, Mykhailyna Roshkevych, Olesya Bazhanska, Olena Hrytsay) along with unknown facts of their biography. Their path to the almanac is highlighted, the literary texts published in "The Wreath" are analyzed, and their reception in criticism is analyzed. It also shows how the almanac determined the further writing destiny of all these women, allowing them to continue their literary careers — or, conversely, becoming the final point in it.

In essence, this collection of essays is the first popular, revealing, commented edition of the reprint version of "The First Wreath". It will reveal its interesting publishing background, based on valuable archival documents. The edition is very important in view of the jubilee year of the 140th anniversary of the Ukrainian women's movement.
