Josip Broz Tito was an eternal partisan – a typical creature of the era of extremes, an era that he not only survived, but also shaped and suffered. During his life, he was a world-renowned statesman. Today, many consider him a cruel dictator. So who was he really? Mari-Janina Kalič provides a wonderful opportunity to look beyond the myths and legends to take a closer look at this historical figure, telling the adventurous story of his life against the backdrop of the ups and downs that Yugoslavia experienced.

Tito is a politician of his own kind. He was a visionary and a pragmatist, a strategist and a practitioner, someone who, thanks to incredible talents and in very special historical circumstances, made a dizzying career. During World War II, together with his partisans, he single-handedly liberated Yugoslavia from German occupation. It was precisely this role that allowed him to reveal all his abilities and established his long-term rule in the country. Because it is quite likely that without this eternal partisan. Yugoslavia would have suffered a split immediately after the Second World War. For 35 years, he remained an unchanging moderator of the more or less successful coexistence of the different peoples of this motley state.

Unfortunately, Yugoslavia did not manage to survive Tito for too long, and then - an outbreak of such unprecedented violence, which post-war Europe did not experience until the war of Russia against Ukraine. And since then, the shadow of bitter defeat has been cast over Tito's entire life.
