The suburbs of Athens before World War II. For Maria, Infanta and Catherine - three sisters - summer begins with the purchase of hats - a special one for each. The book drags on summer weekdays and holidays, with parties, horse rides and conversations in the meadow about love and pleasure. In an atmosphere of peace and lazy days, the sisters grow a garden, fall in love and look into the secret corners of their souls to understand themselves and the world around them, and also solve the mystery of their Polish grandmother...
Written in a light and at the same time emotionally rich language, the novel "Three Summers" by Margarita Liberaki combines the features of a coming-of-age novel, family history and psychological prose. It is one of the most famous works of Greek literature of the 20th century, which has become a classic thanks to its subtle depiction of female experience, family memory and the elusive atmosphere of a passing summer.
In 1950, the novel was published in France by Gallimard, on the recommendation of Albert Camus. In a letter to Marguerite Liberaci, he wrote: “The sun has disappeared from the books of our time… That is why they hinder us from living instead of helping us. But in your country this secret is still passed down, from initiate to initiate. You are one of those who pass it on. I feel a kinship with this book.”
