Tayo, a young man of mixed Native American and European descent, returns home from the battlefields of World War II. But even once he finds himself back among the familiar landscapes of the Laguna Pueblo reservation, he is still scarred by this traumatic experience. He is also perhaps more hurt by the rejection of his own people. Only by rediscovering the traditions, stories, and rituals of his ancestors can he begin to heal and finally find peace.

The great novel by the Native American writer, a leading representative of the so-called Native American Renaissance, Leslie Marmon Silko, “The Ceremony,” is a work about the double trauma of war and colonialism that has long become a classic of American literature. Unfortunately, Silko’s work is also extremely relevant for Ukraine in the 21st century.
