Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi (1864–1913) is one of the most famous modernists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a master of realism and impressionism. His works are watercolors, etudes, and sketches in prose. The writer depicts the world in such a way that it seems as if we are not reading the text, but contemplating paintings in which every detail is symbolic, every stroke is designed to reflect emotion, and the composition and proportions are carefully calibrated. Kotsiubynskyi does not describe events, but passes them through the consciousness of the characters so that we see sounds and hear colors, feel what is said by touch, and immerse ourselves in polyphony that creates contrast or, conversely, forms harmony. That is why the artist's work conquers new and new generations of readers.
Our publication contains the most famous prose of the outstanding writer: "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" (1911), "At a High Price" (1901), "What is Written in the Book of Life" (1910), "On the Stone" (1902), "Intermezzo" (1908), "Apple Blossom" (1902), "Dream" (1911). All of them are iconic for Ukrainian literature and are the best examples in their genres.
