Description

The life of Tove Jansson, a world-famous artist and writer, was full of work, love and constant creative searches. Tove painted whimsical self-portraits, drew political caricatures and comics, wrote adventure and philosophical stories, built a house on an island, studied, loved, traveled and divided her time between the roles of a painter, illustrator and writer. This internal confrontation between word and image, between serious art and profitable craft, between “Moomin-mama” and an author for adults accompanied her constantly.

Insanely hardworking, meticulous, merciless in self-criticism, Tove Jansson purposefully built her work and sought to create truly powerful art. Ironically, it was the “frivolous” Moomin stories that brought Tove world fame, in whose stories she weaves the experiences of family and growing up, living through World War II, separation and loss – but leaves so much space in Moominvalley for security, carefreeness and quiet joy that there are enough for generations of readers.

In 2025, the world celebrated the 80th anniversary of the first Moomin story, and this first, most complete biography of Tove Jansson, which includes her previously unknown letters, diaries and notes, is a great way to celebrate.
