The publication presents a selection of mostly little-known journalistic essays by the prominent humanities scholar Yuriy Shevelev (1908–2002), whose common theme is the problems of science and culture in their connections with politics.
Published between 1944 and 1996, these publications contain a holistic vision of Ukraine in the modern world and express the historical, civilizational, psychological, and worldview roots of the difficulties, both external and internal, that Ukrainians must overcome, creating a modern democratic state capable of taking a worthy place in the global intellectual diversity through the awareness and nurturing of their own deep essence.
The author's reflections on the logic of historical development acquire a particularly relevant sound in the circumstances of the current Ukrainian-Russian confrontation.
