A Thousand Splendid Suns is the second novel by Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini, in which the fates of two women are intertwined against the backdrop of terrible events in 20th-century Afghanistan.

Mariam was only fifteen when she was sent from her village to Kabul and forced to marry the much older Rashid. However, the ravages of war destroy everything: dreams, hopes, aspirations... When the Taliban finally come to power, people's lives turn into a joyless existence in hunger, violence and fear. Is it possible to find crumbs of happiness among all that blackness? Surprisingly, love is capable of giving incredible strength, teaching us to act on the call of the heart, and sometimes even sacrifice ourselves, saving others. Love gives us the strength to continue in the most difficult conditions with admirable heroism.
