Album "Ukraine and Ukrainians. Historical and Ethnographic Art Album of Ivan Honchar: A Selection of Sheets" (2024)
These are selected sheets from 18 volumes of Ukrainian studies by Ivan Honchar, important for understanding the strength, resilience and unity of Ukrainians in historical retrospect and today. The albums "Ukraine and Ukrainians" are unique handmade art books, both scientific and artistic, created in the 1960s-1980s. Each sheet of the album is a collage: Ivan Honchar glued originals of old photographs or reproductions of rare photographs from different parts of Ukraine (local types, landscapes, architecture and everyday life, rituals, folk crafts, prominent cultural figures) onto a thick base, drew an ornament from a towel, carving, carpet or Easter egg. He also developed an author's font with which he signed the photographs. The result is a visual history of Ukrainian life in the late 19th and mid-20th centuries.
