Demonology is an understanding of the dark, whimsical, and otherworldly in folk beliefs. This edition presents three classic views on Ukrainian demonology: the historian Volodymyr Antonovych, who researched the documents of witch trials; ethnographer Volodymyr Hnatiuk, who studied folk tales about evil spirits; writer and folklorist Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky, who sought to fit Ukrainian mythology into a broader European context. From fairy tales about mermaids, woodmen, and werewolves to stories about burning witches in Ukrainian villages: these scientific works convey the spirit of their time when magical thinking was not yet considered just superstition and belief in witchcraft was widespread and sincere.
Authors: Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky, Volodymyr Antonovych, Volodymyr Hnatiuk.
