Description

Palaces, balls, estates... a flirtatious female voice, luxuriously dressed young men, a carelessly thrown word. Duel! Dawn, a deserted meadow, two men appear; eventually, a crimson spot blurs through the snow-white shirt of one of them.

Somewhere, such a stereotype was formed about duels. In fact, everything was different, especially in Ukraine. Of course, balls with estates served as a background for duels, but nothing more.

The book "Ukrainian dueling tradition" by the historian Pavel Zinchenko is an excursion into the world of the fiery Ukrainian nobility and wayward Cossacks; these are stories about who was the "first saber of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth", who fought with the famous seducer Casanova, how aristocratic traditions incited an uprising in the occupied Moscow and, of course, why are the Sarmatians here.
