Ninety-one-year-old Gretel Fernsby has been living in an elite house in London for several decades. Her life is quiet and peaceful, but behind the woman's shoulders is a dark past. She tells no one about her escape from Nazi Germany at the age of twelve, about the difficult post-war years she spent in France with her mother. But she prefers least to remember her father, who was the commandant of one of the largest concentration camps, and the family tragedy.

One day, a new family moves into the apartment on the floor below. Unexpectedly for herself, Gretel makes friends with a little boy, although his presence awakens sad memories from the past.
