The Second World War ground the lives of millions of Ukrainians on its millstones; those who did not die at the hands of the Nazis became victims of repression by the Soviet authorities. And only a few, like Stefan Terlezki, were lucky enough to emerge victorious from the stunning ordeal. Stefan was born in a Galician village in 1927, studied in a Polish and then a Soviet school, and at the age of fourteen was deported to Austria for forced labor. After the victory over the Nazis, he hid from the Soviets in the British sector and eventually emigrated to Britain, where he later became a successful politician and the first Ukrainian to reach Parliament. Drawing on his own experience, Terletsky took it upon himself to debunk communist deception; he was extremely happy when the USSR collapsed and Ukraine gained independence in 1991. Stefan Terlezki's biography is captivating, like an action movie, and will not leave anyone indifferent who, like him, sincerely loves Ukraine.
