Witch, ghoul, sorceress… The very variety of names testifies to the popularity of this colorful character of traditional Ukrainian folk demonology.
In his book “The Witch in the Folk Representations of Ukrainians,” Volodymyr Halaichuk examines materials on witchcraft from different ethnic areas of Ukraine. Which witches are more ferocious—trained or native? Is it true that the seventh daughter is born a witch, and can she be identified by her tail or fused eyebrows? How are deadly spells transmitted with a glass of horilka? Do ghouls help witches reach Lysa Gora, and how are frogs and snakes involved in milk thefts?
The author tells how, according to the ideas of our ancestors, witches acquired supernatural abilities, used and transmitted “power,” and died; he explains how the image of the evil sorceress became an integral part of our traditional spiritual culture.
