Norway, 1662. It's a dangerous time to be a woman: all you have to do is dance and you'll be accused of witchcraft. After the village learns of an affair between the recently widowed Zigri and a local merchant, the woman is taken to the fortress of Varde and condemned for witchcraft.
Ingeborg, Zigri's daughter, overcomes many dangers to bring her mother home. She is accompanied on this journey by Maren, the very daughter of the woman who was burned as a witch. Her friend's crazy nature and indomitable spirit give Ingeborg the courage to go into the unknown and risk everything to save her family.
The fortress also houses the prisoner Anna Rodius, the former mistress of the King of Denmark, who was banished in disgrace to the island of Varde. What will she do—and who will she betray—to return to her privileged life at court?
These witches from Varde are stronger than even the king. In times when everything is against them, they refuse to be victims. They seek justice. They just need to show their true essence.
