Norway, 1662. It’s a dangerous time to be a woman: all you have to do is dance and you’ll be accused of witchcraft. After the village learns of the affair between the recently widowed Sigri and a local merchant, the woman is taken to Varde Fortress and convicted of witchcraft.
Sigri’s daughter, Ingeborg, overcomes many dangers to return her mother home. She is accompanied on this journey by Maren, the daughter of the woman who was burned as a witch. Her friend’s wild nature and indomitable spirit give Ingeborg the courage to venture into the unknown and risk everything to save her family.
Also held in the fortress is Anna Rodius, the former mistress of the King of Denmark, who was exiled in disgrace to the island of Varde. What will she do—and who will she betray—to return to her privileged life at court?
These witches of Varde are stronger than even the king. In times when everything is against them, they refuse to be victims. They seek justice. They only need to show their true nature.
