When the First World War broke out, Urban Martin was still a young man, having just finished his studies at a military school, worked at a factory, and in his free time drew. Urban recorded his memories of childhood, war, and the great love of his life in diaries, which he bequeathed to his grandson Stefan Geertmans.
After rereading his grandfather's diaries, Stefan Geertmans, one of the most popular contemporary Belgian writers, decided to create a book. "War and Turpentine" was published in 2013, and since then the novel has become popular in 16 countries around the world, and The Guardian predicts that the book will become a future classic.
