The millstones of life grind people into flour, and no one knows what time will mold from it... The family of young Yavdokha is dying of hunger, like many other families in Machuhy. The wife of the Soviet commissar, Solomiia, now practices medical fasting and then frantically "eats" the loss of a child and her husband's indifference. The representative of the village government, Svyryd, is completely confused about his feelings and does not know what is leading him now - a heart in love or the party...
All these people seem so different that there is an insurmountable gulf between them. But they still don't know they are actually going toward each other. They go finally hug and build a fragile bridge over the insatiable anthill of their tormentors...
A deeply psychological novel about one of the most difficult pages of Ukrainian history - the Holodomor of 1932-1933, where the art chamber of human destinies is subtly depicted against the background of an immense tragedy.
