Konstantinos Cavafy (1863–1933) is an outstanding Greek poet of the 20th century, whose work opened the world to modern Greek literature. The heyday of his work fell precisely on the 20th century, although he wrote mostly about the Hellenistic era or Byzantium. This can probably be explained by the fact that Cavafy was born and lived most of his life in Alexandria, which is considered a kind of symbol of Hellenism, playing a special role in the development of culture, science and art of this period. Perhaps that is why the poet managed to organically combine in his work elements of the ancient Greek tradition with the authentic modern Greek cultural tradition and thus outline the main vectors of the development of Greek poetry of the 20th century.
