Opening each of the seven chapters of his work "How to Read Lacan" with a specific quote from the corpus of texts of the famous French psychoanalyst and applying it to the interpretation of various philosophical, artistic and ideological products, Slavoj Žižek clearly demonstrates to us the art of reading with Lacan, at the same time, like a skilled magician, imperceptibly transforming it into an interpretation of Lacan himself. The focus of the Slovenian philosopher, as in many of his other works, is the human subject, his/her decentered desire, the dimensions of interpassivity and the Other, as well as the intricacies of the super-ego and the law, which in our permissive era of a kind of "compulsion to pleasure" acquire a completely new sound. Slavoj Žižek's How to Read Lacan, first published in 2006 as part of a celebrated series of publications on prominent thinkers under the general editorship of the British philosopher Simon Critchley, is not only an unsurpassed introduction to Jacques Lacan's system of thought, but also a passionate defense of psychoanalysis in general, which today increasingly finds itself between the Scylla of ignorance and obscurantism and the Charybdis of overly optimistic pharmacological scientism.
