Description

"Vanity Fair. A Novel Without a Hero" by William Makepeace Thackeray is a satirical novel written in 1848, which has been read and reread all over the world for almost two centuries. What is it so attractive about? Why is it so famous, and yet so unknown? And why do some works become world classics, while others do not? Almost rhetorical questions...

Thackeray could hardly have hoped that in the 21st century his satire would be relevant, that his characters would not only be known, sympathized with or condemned for their actions, but would also reflect on what determines a happy fate: heredity or upbringing. Why did Rebecca Sharp, who was intelligent, beautiful, and talented, never achieve the wealth and position she dreamed of? Was she born a duplicitous scoundrel or did she become so because of poverty and lack of upbringing? And is the sincere but naive Emilia Sedley happy in marriage with the noble Dobbin? And each character of "Vanity Fair. A Novel Without a Hero", which was depicted with extraordinary skill by the writer, is interesting in its own way, even if depicted with witty irony and ruthless satire.

The very title of the novel is an apt description of the unprincipled consumer world, where deceit, the thirst for profit and immorality reign. However, despite the flaws, there is a place for nobility, courage, sincere love and devotion in society. And it will always be so!
