Description

The European Dictionary of Philosophies is an international project led by Professor Barbara Cassin (University of Paris IV Sorbonne). The aim of the project is to deepen the dialogue between the different philosophical traditions of Europe by clarifying philosophical untranslatability that exists in different European languages. The French version of the European Dictionary of Philosophies was published in 2004. The Ukrainian version, the first volume of which was published in 2009, became the second in the world. Three years later, the first volume of the Arabic edition was published, and the English and Romanian versions will be published in the near future. The Dictionary is also translated into Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Farsi. The national versions of the Dictionary are not simple copies of the original French edition, because the clarification of a particular philosophical term in one language differs from the similar clarification in another. Therefore, work on the Dictionary in each language space is not only translation, but also adaptation, development, and creative processing. The work of specialists from various countries in Europe, America and Asia continues. In particular, the Ukrainian edition of the Dictionary contains a number of original articles and additions. The creation of the Ukrainian version of the Dictionary contributes to the development of domestic humanitarian terminology and gives a noticeable impetus to Ukrainian philosophical research, because the reproduction of the entire spectrum of European philosophical discourses requires new terminological developments. This project also activates language-forming processes by involving linguists, philosophers and humanists of all other specializations in the discussion of terminological issues. It paves the way for the correlation of Ukrainian humanitarian thought with other European traditions.

The first two volumes of the “European Dictionary of Philosophies”, published in 2010 and 2011, received positive reviews from Ukrainian experts and readers. In particular, the Dictionary won the "Best Book" competition at the 17th Publishers Forum in Lviv, was recognized as the "Book of the Year 2010" (first volume) and "Book of the Year 2011" (second volume) in the "Sofia. Foreign Humanities" nomination, and also received the Yuriy Prylyuk Award for the best editorial and publishing project of 2010 in the field of philosophy.
