Set 15 years after the end of the first book, the Gilead regime is beginning to rot from within, and we see this process through the eyes of three very different women: Aunt Lydia, the architect of the system who secretly collects incriminating material on its top; Agnes, a young girl who grew up inside Gilead as the daughter of a high-ranking official; and Daisy, a teenager from Canada who observes the horrors of Gilead from afar, until she learns that she is directly connected to its fate and must carry out a dangerous mission.
The Testaments gives a sense of completion and hope. It is a more dynamic and less claustrophobic novel than The Handmaid's Tale, expanding Atwood's universe and transforming a personal tragedy into a grand historical panorama.
