The works of Alistair McReady Bell, a giant figure among Canadian engravers of the 20th century, are highly valued for his melancholic depictions of ships, birds and animals - expressionistic and easily recognizable. In his youth, Bell worked as a draftsman at a factory that produced shaped rolls. Perhaps that is why he was distinguished by his attention to lines and internal rhythm. Studying the nature and fauna of British Columbia from within, this gifted artist then traveled the world creating sketches of exotic birds and animals. These sketches formed the basis of more than 250 prints of the master. Bell's prints are instantly recognizable for their awkwardness and deep tones, as well as their innovative use of natural texture. His works have been repeatedly exhibited abroad, they are represented in the art collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in England and the National Gallery in Ottawa. A complete collection of prints of his work is permanently housed in the Vancouver Art Gallery.
