"This is a list of pills that I take every day. Can you check if everything is correct here?”

Such questions are not uncommon, it is quite a familiar phrase that pharmacists regularly hear in pharmacies. Capsules and pills have become a regular part of our lives, and many people start their day not with coffee, but with a handful of pills. Is self-medication a good idea? Of course not. But it is definitely worth understanding what happens to the body when it is offered another pill for a headache, for example.

In this book, pharmacist Viktoriia Mykhailova talks about how medicines affect our body and how the body reacts to them, what all these phrases like "take on an empty stomach" and "30 minutes before meals" mean. She talks about the history and future of pharmacy, popular drugs, and their production, pharmaceutical myths, and peculiarities of taking drugs in emergency situations.

Viktoriia tells how people came from treatment with mercury baths, gold, and arsenic to the production of real medicines, and also explains how long it takes to develop one "pill" and why medicines with the same composition differ so much in price. And, of course, it describes how the painkillers and cough medicines that are just now lying in your home medicine cabinet work, and how dangerous grapefruit is when combined with medicine.

Viktoriia Mykhailova is the director of the quality assurance and control department at the PS Pharma Group pharmaceutical company (Dusseldorf/Cologne, Germany).
