Not because of nostalgia, but for the sake of a wicked joke, or rather, for the sake of revenge, Ludvik Jan goes to his small homeland, to a small Moravian suburb. Because it was because of an unsuccessful joke fifteen years ago that everything went awry: Ludvik was betrayed by his comrades, expelled from the party and the university and sent to the penal "black battalion". Life did not break him, but it made him obsessed with revenge, which eventually turns into a pure farce.
"The Joke" is chronologically the earliest novel of the cult contemporary writer Milan Kundera, and is constructed according to the principle of folk polyphony, when the harmonious sound of many voices is combined in a chorus.
