The Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was founded in 1073 and consecrated in 1089. This church is one of the most revered shrines in the Orthodox world. Over the centuries, the temple suffered more than once from attacks, robberies, natural disasters, and destruction. But it was revived again and again by our people.
Just as the history of Ukraine is impossible without the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, so the history of the Lavra is impossible without the Great Church. Ukrainian Lavra.
This edition of "Antiquarian" is:
- about the past of the church, its greatness, and its role in the formation of Ukrainian identity and spirituality,
- about the events that changed the form of the cathedral, but never changed its essence,
- about decorations, iconostases, objects of cult purpose (Gospel in precious frames, liturgical dishes, articles of precious fabrics, crosses), which belong to the best examples of national art,
- about the names that became symbols of the creation, preservation, and restoration of the temple,
- about the work of modern architects, archaeologists, historians, art historians, restorers, engineers, and builders.
In general, the materials of the magazine contain the entire history of the cathedral: from the stories related to its foundation to its reconstruction at the end of the 20th century. The authors rely on annals, archival materials, and other historical sources, analyze archaeological findings and drawings, and mention the founders, benefactors, and artists who made considerable efforts to build and furnish the cathedral.
