Description

In the Lviv region, not far from the Ukrainian-Polish border, there is the ancient town of Dobromyl.

Since 1374, Dobromyl and the villages around it have belonged to the Gerburt brothers, representatives of an ancient noble family. They built castles, churches, defensive fortifications here... Later, craft workshops worked here, merchants traded briskly at large fairs, and there was even their own printing house.

However, Dobromyl has always been at the epicenter of historical events. There were wars and the borders of the empires to which this region belonged changed. Often, attempts were made to erase or "correct" history here, to destroy the cultural heritage of previous generations.

Now, caring natives of Dobromyl are reviving the history of the town: they study, save, and restore its numerous monuments. An active philanthropist — engineer and entrepreneur Andriy Pushak — has become a partner of our new issue, "Antiquary" No. 139, in which we tell about Dobromyl, its past and present.

So, read in this issue:

about the history of the city of Dobromyl,

the dynasty of the Herburts,

about the High Castle, located 4 km from the city,

about the ancient Dobromyl Monastery: its history, cultural monuments and the path to restoration,

about other architectural monuments of the city that preserve outstanding and funny stories,

about what the people of Dobromyl ate and drank in the 17th-18th centuries,

about the life of the Jewish community in the city,

about the Dobromyl region in literature - in "The Adventures of the Good Soldier Švejk" by Yaroslav Hasek and in a number of works by the modern writer Halyna Pahutyak,

as well as about the reconstruction of the Arsenal - a 16th-century building that belonged to the Lower Castle, and has now become the cultural center of the region

Authors of the publications and interviewees - Doctor of Historical Sciences Mykhailo Kril, local historian and journalist Dmytro Antonyuk, Doctor of historical sciences Oleg Odnorozhenko, candidate of art history Rostislav Zabashta, historian Oleksiy Zotykov, philanthropist Andriy Pushak, former abbot of the Dobromyl Monastery Father Simeon Manko, and writer Halyna Pahutyak.
