1964. The idyllic town of Zephyr in Alabama. People work at a paper mill and a dairy, priests deliver passionate sermons, somewhere in space the first satellites and ships are flying, the relationship between blacks and whites is still ambiguous. And there are things in life that amaze the imagination of twelve-year-old Corey Mackenson, who dreams of becoming a writer. Like every boy, he experiences school chores, the joy of vacations and adventures with a group of friends. And he has no doubt that spirits can visit the living, that dangerous criminals are hiding in the forest outside the city, and that an ancient giant creature lives in the river. Corey observes these phenomena with such delight that we are capable of only in childhood. And accidentally witnessed crimes and not-so-accidental searches for the truth lead the heroes through a world where sincere naivety and true evil collide. Between them are things both terrifying and beautiful, magical and crazy, fantastic and real. Cory delves into the depths of Zephyr's mysteries and eventually discovers that while childhood joys fade and are left behind, growing up is also a bizarrely beautiful journey.
