The first volume of the collected prose works of Gustav Mayrink, an Austrian master of supernatural literature, included the novels "Golem", "Green Face" and "Walpurgis Night".
"Golem" (1915) brought the author worldwide recognition and became one of the most successful novels of the 20th century. The novel was based on the legend of a rabbi who created a Golem - a creature from clay, which he revived and endowed with a soul thanks to a Kabbalistic spell. In the novel "Green Face" (1916), the author develops the plot around the unexpected meeting of the main character with a strange green-faced owner of a magic shop. "Walpurgis Night" (1917) focuses on the contrast between the world of ordinary people and the mysterious, mystical world connected to ours.
The extensive use of elements of occult and mystical teachings combined with descriptions of contemporary reality made Meirink's works original and unique and brought him well-deserved recognition. Thanks to the success of the three novels contained in this book, Gustav Meirink - together with Hans Heinz Evers and Karl Hans Stroble - became one of the main German-language writers of the early 20th century who worked in the genre of supernatural literature.
