Little Philip's world is cozy and understandable. Caring and attentive parents are trying their best to give their sons the childhood they themselves did not have. Talented older brother Sandy is always there, it is so easy to admire and be proud of him. In his native, familiar Jewish neighborhood of Newark, everyone works hard, respects each other, President Roosevelt and America, which sheltered the older generations of these people, and for subsequent generations became the only true homeland. The greatest treasure in Philip's life is an album with stamps, the greatest danger is the imaginary ghosts of deceased relatives, with whom the impressionable boy's imagination has populated the damp basement of a house for two and a half families. But with the outbreak of the Great War in Europe, this peaceful and safe world begins to be irresistibly permeated with anxiety and uncertainty. And later it is flooded with all-consuming fear.
