The collection "Famous tales of Roman deeds" ("Gesta Romanorum", beginning of the 14th century) is a work, from its inception, aimed at combining the pleasant with the useful. Attracting listeners with exotic, fascinating, and sometimes spicy "ancient Roman" stories, medieval preachers encouraged their flock to live a pious life and care for the salvation of souls. The publication of the complete Ukrainian translation of the collection is similarly intended, on the one hand, to bring pleasure to a wide range of readers from a journey into the colorful and whimsical world of the medieval imagination, and on the other hand, to serve as an incentive for Ukrainian historians, philologists, and religious scholars to take a closer look at this hitherto little-known in our country monuments of ancient European literature.
