"Star Corsair" is a famous novel by Oles Berdnyk, a cult Ukrainian esoteric writer, science fiction writer, philosopher, and dissident, who was expelled from the Union of Writers in the early 70s and then imprisoned. His work became iconic for those who sought to break out of the totalitarian regime, at least intellectually.
The novel's main idea is internal freedom, without which external freedom is impossible. Soviet ideologues saw the novel as an allegory of totalitarian reality, so the book was removed from libraries.
The clear Ukrainian-centrism of "Star Corsair" made it a cult work for Ukrainians worldwide. Instead, Soviet literary critics accused the writer of "space nationalism" and "hochlomania in space."
