This is a historical novel by the Crimean Tatar writer Yusuf Bolat, written during 1939 - 1940. It tells about the childhood and youth of Alim, who later became a famous defender of the impoverished peasants of Crimea, a kind of Crimean Tatar Ustym Karmeliuk; about that what life circumstances prompted him to become a robber.
In the novel, the consequences of the colonial policy of the russian Empire and Crimea, in particular - the forced resettlement of the native inhabitants to a foreign land, are quite fully disclosed. The overarching theme of the novel is the fate of a person who, by force of circumstances, found himself on the other side of the law.
The image of the main character appears through the depiction of his relations with the community, his attitude to the surrounding reality, and his attempts to solve the problems that concern the Crimean Tatars.
