The events of Kurt Vonnegut's novel "Slapstick, or Lonesome No More!" take place in the United States of America in the nearest future. The state has disintegrated and lost all its prestige; at the same time, the entire earthly civilization has been destroyed, and natural and man-made cataclysms are raging worldwide. Despite this, people do not lose kindness, cordiality, and compassion.
The novel combines an original idea and a brilliant author's style. Autobiographical memories are transformed into heartbreaking passages of fantasy, and paradoxical situations and grotesque characters are described with emotional warmth and tenderness. "Buffonade, or No Longer Alone" is full of gentle humor and subtle irony.
