The events of Kurt Vonnegut's novel "Slapstick, or Lonesome No More!" take place in the United States of America in the nearest future. The state has disintegrated and lost all its prestige; at the same time, the entire earthly civilization has been destroyed, and natural and man-made cataclysms are raging worldwide. Despite this, people do not lose kindness, cordiality, and compassion.
