A teacher of writing skills, who lost a friend to suicide, receives a Great Dane as an "inheritance" from him. Alone with a huge dog in a small apartment, despite the ban on keeping animals at home, the heroine tries to survive the loss and put her life back together through her love for the dog. It is a sensual story of grieving and acceptance; an extremely personal poignant letter to a friend; the search for answers in literature and an intricate network of thoughts and events, where it is no longer possible to distinguish what is fiction and what is real life... The novel received more than 20 different awards, including the American National Book Award in the category "Fiction" (2018) , and in 2024 it was included in the list of the 100 best books of the 21st century by The New York Times and was adapted into a film starring Naomi Watts and Bill Murray.
