Erna Elzner's life can be called happy: a wealthy family, friendly relations with her sisters, growing up at the beginning of the 20th century when ordinary citizens did not even have a premonition of a great war. One day at dinner, she sees the spirit of her grandfather, or so she thinks. From that moment on, Erna participates in home spiritual sessions as a medium. Themes of growing up, emancipation, attention to mysticism, and irrationalism, which flourishes against the background of rapid industrial progress, are intricately intertwined in Olga Tokarchuk's novel. As a result, we have one of the most interesting texts of the Polish Nobel laureate.
