In the 1950s, a talented and promising state security officer travels from Brno to the West to fulfill a special mission. One evening, he meets an attractive waitress, not even realizing that she is in fact a fox turned into a woman on Stalin's orders.
Jiří Kratochvil intertwines the storylines of both characters, seasoning them with philological games, grotesque, philosophical questions, and satire of the totalitarian regime. And then he himself appears on the pages of his novel, commenting on events from behind the scenes.
