“The Lover” is an autobiographical novel that brought Marguerite Duras the Prix Goncourt (1984) and world recognition.
The beginning of the 1930s of the 20th century, Saigon (Vietnam - at that time the main colony of France). A passionate love breaks out between a girl from a poor family and a wealthy man. But is happiness promised to them in a colonial society permeated with prejudice and corruption? Here, the victims are everyone: those who love, those who condemn, those who have power, and those who have despaired and submitted to the system...
The entire work is full of allusions, repetitions, fragmentary memories, dialogues, a sense of fatality and the complexity of human relationships in the context of the colonial world. It is a monologue, a reflection, a confession, where the characters are only shadows that should not interfere with the words.
