Due to her fascination with the occult and magic, Shirley Jackson gained the fame of a witch among her contemporaries. However, the heroes of her works are not otherworldly mysterious forces, but very real people, from whom this reality often erases human features, changes personality, oppresses, frightens. Because the most terrible evil hides not at all in occult books or spells, but in the souls of ordinary "decent" citizens, overshadowed by cruelty and prejudice. This is especially vividly demonstrated by the characters of the main story of the collection "The Lottery", which is recognized as a classic of American horror of the last century.
