The plot of the novel revolves around the history of the indigenous people of Guatemala, whose lands are invaded by colonizers. The impudence and extortion of the planters prompt the local leader Gaspar Ilom to raise an uprising. Another plot line focuses on the postman Nicho. To find his missing wife, he descends into the underworld, where he meets a guardian spirit - a coyote, who is supposed to help him. These stories invisibly influence each other, intertwining and branching out into related stories.
"The Corn People" combines Guatemalan legends with dramatic plots from the real world: you will see how a person turns into an animal, you will follow a herbalist - the owner of the secrets of healing; you will learn the story of a woman - a dual being, whose nature is both flight and persecution.
Miguel Angel Asturias created a monumental epic - an ode to the great culture and literature of the Maya, and at the same time a fascinating story about the consequences of colonial conquests and an expressive portrait of society in the destructive process of acculturation.
