Description

"The Last Sejm of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth" is the first book in the historical trilogy "The Year 1794" by the outstanding Polish writer, Nobel Prize laureate Władysław Reymont.

The events of the novel take place during the session of the last Sejm of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in Grodno in 1793, when Poland was forced to ratify the treaties on the second partition - between Russia and Prussia.

The main character of the work is Lieutenant Sever Zaremba, a former soldier who resigned after the defeat in the Polish-Russian War of 1792 and the establishment of the Targovishte Confederation. He joins a conspiratorial organization preparing an uprising against Russian influence.

The events unfold against a broad historical background - the book skillfully depicts the customs, political atmosphere and everyday life of that era. Through the prism of human destinies, Reymont reveals the drama of the era - great historical events appear not as abstraction, but as living reality. The first volume, "The Last Sejm of the Commonwealth", immerses the reader in an atmosphere of political tension, internal contradictions and despair on the eve of the Kościuszko Uprising.

The historical trilogy "The Year 1794" became a deep artistic interpretation of one of the most tragic and at the same time heroic pages of Polish history.
