In 1836, the London publishing house Chapman and Hall published the first issues of The Pickwick Papers, the young author of which hid under the pseudonym Boz. At that time, probably no one thought that this work was destined to become a recognized masterpiece of world humor and satire, that its main characters — the likable eccentric Samuel Pickwick, his witty servant Sam Weller, and their numerous friends and acquaintances — would become beloved literary heroes of English readers, and that the publication of the work would open the way to world fame for the outstanding English writer Charles Dickens, whose talent, in particular, was paid due respect by Taras Shevchenko and Ivan Franko.
