A New York newspaper introduces a column called “Lonely Hearts,” where anyone can write about their own troubles and receive a response in the publication’s pages. During the Great Depression, letters from desperate New Yorkers are increasingly frequent, and a journalist who signs herself “Miss Lonelyhearts” is assigned to answer them. Each letter becomes a test: can she bear the burden of someone else’s pain without breaking down herself?
