The novel's protagonist, Kilgore Trout, is a science fiction writer who travels from one science fiction convention to another. At one of these conventions, he meets Dwayne Hoover, the owner of a company that sells "Pontiacs", and their meeting becomes the occasion for many heartbreaking and unexpected situations.

The story in the novel is structured as if the author is telling about the Earth to an alien who knows nothing about humanity or human civilization, even about the simplest things - reproduction, weapons, a flag, and an apple. Such a story allows us to see the motivation and consequences of human actions from an unexpected angle.
