"The Cathedral" is a philosophical novel that examines important social and national problems from the perspective of eternal humanistic truths that human civilization must be guided by in order not to come to destruction and annihilation. At the center of the work is the problem of the spirituality of modern man, or rather, the problem of the spirituality of a modern Ukrainian. Therefore, it is closely connected with the problems of parents and children, the continuity of generations, the preservation of historical memory and national dignity, national nihilism, and apostasy from one's people. The novel consists of many chapters, each of which tells about one of the heroes. But all of them are united by the image of the cathedral, which is the epicenter of the events unfolding around it. It can be called the main character of the novel. It became a real artistic discovery for Oles Honchar, perceived as a painful warning for all Ukrainians.
