Valerian Pidmohylnyi (1901–1937) is a Ukrainian writer and translator, a representative of the generation of the "Shooted Revival", whose life was cut short by the Stalinist regime.
The creative sun of the novelist rose early: at the age of nineteen he published his first collection, at the age of twenty he made his debut with the translation of the novel "Tais" by Anatole France. Thanks to Pidmohylny, the works of Balzac, Stendhal, Diderot, Hugo, Voltaire, Merimet were published in Ukrainian. As an author, Valerian Pidmohylnyi showed himself to be a master of deep psychologism and intellectualism. He subtly depicted the problems of the city and the village, man and circumstances... Despite the variety of plots, these features are inherent in all his works.
You can enjoy the language, the depth of the images, the author's style in the selection, which includes the works: "The Sun Rises", "A Difficult Question", "Haidamaka", "Ostap Shaptala", "Military Pilot", "The Story of Mrs. Yvga", "Death" and "A story without a title..." is the last unfinished work, which is called a unique example of an intellectual and psychological novel in Ukrainian literature of the 20th century.
