“Twice in the Same River” is a new essay by Finnish writer Sophie Oksanen, in which she explores misogyny as a state policy in Russia. It is a story about war and women, about how Russia silences women by using rape as a weapon. About the indifference and silence that continue Russia’s tradition of impunity. About why it is important to talk about war crimes.
In its wars of aggression, Russia has always used the same methods: deportation, Russification, propaganda, terror of the civilian population, destruction of culture. Russia has never apologized and has not been punished for its crimes. Heraclitus was wrong: you can step into the same river twice. And only condemning evil can stop it.
